Case Study

High Temperature Gas Nozzle

  • Size: 149lbs, 11″ in diameter
  • *Notes: Investment casting saves time and offers significant savings.
An existing customer had secured a refurbishment project at a chemical company that utilizes cooling nozzles in their production process. The equipment being refurbished has a useful life of more than 15 years, making the need for replacement parts difficult to predict. Lengthy production stoppages are unacceptable for the petrochemical end user, and conventional replacement nozzles have a lead time of more than 30 weeks.

In need of a prompt solution, the customer turned to TPM. Working from an existing component, TPM created a 3D model and produced 3D printed wax patterns via rapid prototyping methods. The 3D patterns were then cast and further processed to include HIP, Dye Penetrant and X-Ray (due to the high temperatures at which these nozzles operate). From printing the 3D patterns to shipping completed parts required only seven weeks, which was well within the accepted refurbishment time allotted for the overall project. TPM’s approach saved our customer and his customer millions of dollars due to downtime avoidance had they needed 7 months vs 7 weeks to complete the project.
