Marine Safety Device

  • Size: 12lbs
  • *Notes: Investment casting solution to safety clevis issue

A new customer needed to resolve an issue for an upgrade to a safety clevis for large marine craft. The part needed to fit in a restricted space, not be too heavy for a person to maneuver, and withstand a 130,000-pound pull test. Working together the Customer and TPM’s team came up with a design that would be easy to interchange with existing craft in the field and work with new designs that were just coming out. The part needed to have very good corrosion resistant characteristics as it is used in a salt water environment.

The final part design fit all of the customer requirements, far exceeding the strength requirements. By working together on the design from the very earliest stages TPM was able best utilize the investment casting process to make the part with a single gate and at a final weight that allowed the part to not only function well but come in well under the customers expected budget. No secondary machining was needed and there was no need for welded segments. TPM’s approach made for a big win project for our customer and resulted in a lighter, stronger and much more cosmetically appealing part weeks faster than other options explored.
